Over 1,400 murders since January in Mexican city, after police chief, city

Another act of violence rocked the Mexican city of Teocaltiche, after the Secretary General of the Municipal Council, José Luis Pereira, was shot dead while dining at a fish restaurant in a dangerous neighborhood in the state of Jalisco. The incident occurred at around 4:57 p.m. on Monday, A2 CNN reports. Authorities confirmed that Pereira had died before medical personnel arrived.

Senator Alejandro Moreno condemned the “traitorous murder” on the X network, criticizing the inability of the federal and Jalisco governments to protect citizens. He demanded immediate justice and tough action against organized crime, which is terrorizing entire regions of the country. “Insecurity is growing while those who should protect us are standing idly by,” he said.

Pereira's murder came just two weeks after the execution of police chief Ramón Grande Moncada. The Teocaltiche municipal administration reacted angrily on social media: "Our people can no longer live in fear and pain. Enough with the deaths, enough with the suffering!"

The US Embassy has warned American citizens to avoid traveling to Jalisco due to high levels of violence, kidnappings and gang warfare. US officials have even banned travel to specific areas of the state.

The situation in Jalisco has deteriorated significantly, with 1,415 murders recorded from January to September 2024 alone. Violence continues to claim lives and shake entire communities that only seek to live in peace and security. (A2 Televizion)
