Seven migrants died when a boat sank in the early hours of this morning near the Greek island of Lesbos in the eastern Aegean, the Hellenic Coast Guard said.
The shipwreck occurred near Cape Korakas, northeast of Lesbos. According to survivors, there were a total of 31 people on board the ship. According to Greek media, the bodies of the victims belong to 3 children, 3 women and a man.
The Coast Guard spotted a boat about five meters long, with a large number of people on board, in the maritime area of "Skala Sykamnias". The boat had taken on water and most of those on board had fallen into the sea. A rescue operation was immediately launched and a total of twenty-three foreigners (8 men, 4 women and 11 minors) were rescued, who were transported to the port of Petra to be handed over to the authorities.
Several patrol boats, a helicopter and other search forces participated in the rescue operation, which was coordinated by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center.
During the investigation, a 20-year-old foreign trafficker was identified and arrested. (A2 Televizion)
