At least six people have died and dozens more have been rescued after a tourist submarine sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt.
NBC News reports that four Russian nationals were among those who died after the ship sank near Hurghada. The submarine, named Sinbad, was carrying 45 passengers, including children.
The Russian Embassy in Cairo told NBC: “ On March 27, at around 10:00, the Sindbad bathyscaphe, owned by the hotel of the same name, sank 1 km from the coast. In addition to the crew, there were 45 tourists on board, including minors. Most of those on board were rescued and taken to hotels and hospitals in Hurghada .”
The group had paid for a sea trip to the coral reefs in Hurghada, according to local media reports. The submarine set off from one of the beaches in the tourist promenade area, Egyptian officials told The Associated Press.
Security and emergency services responded to the incident, including 21 ambulances, Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.
The submarine had been conducting tourist trips to the area for several years. Hurghada is a resort town that stretches about 25 miles along Egypt's Red Sea coast. (A2 Televizion)
