Missile barrage over Kharkiv, Pyongyang continues sending soldiers to Russia

Cooperation between Russia and North Korea continued earlier this year. Pyongyang appears to have sent at least 3,000 more soldiers to Russia, South Korea's military confirmed, demonstrating Pyongyang's continued support for Moscow's war in Ukraine as world leaders call for an end to the three-year conflict.

The reinforcements, sent in January and February, add to the roughly 11,000 troops North Korea has sent to Russia so far, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. About 4,000 of them have been killed or wounded in combat, according to Seoul. Pyongyang has also sent a “significant amount” of short-range ballistic missiles and about 220 170-millimeter self-propelled ground and 240-millimeter multiple rocket launchers, South Korea said. He said the North’s contributions “ are expected to increase according to the situation .”

News of North Korea's continued support for Russia's incursion comes as European leaders and allies meet in Paris on Thursday to discuss support for Ukraine and long-term stability in the region, amid faltering White House efforts to broker a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, injuring nine people and causing significant damage. Emergency services said the attacks had set off four fires in the city centre and posted pictures of firefighters battling the flames alongside piles of rubble.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov said there had been at least 12 drone attacks on the city, a frequent target of the Russian military, located about 30 km (18 miles) from the border.

"There were many damaged residential buildings... one boiler station was completely destroyed. It was the main one for this micro-district and all residents are now left without heating," Terekhov said.

Kharkiv resisted capture in the early weeks of Russia's full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but has been repeatedly hit by drones and missiles, and Russian forces have shifted the focus of their campaign in eastern Ukraine. (A2 Televizion)
