"We are rivals with China, but there is no hostility." This is what the president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated at the European China Conference in Berlin.
"China follows a global order that is Sino-centric and hierarchical. And this is contrary to our interests and values. We must recognize that there is a clear element of rivalry in our relationship. But this rivalry does not have to be hostile. It can be constructive. Therefore, we must be balanced and strategic in our response."
According to her, "cooperation with China on global issues is possible and is happening. There is room to define common values".
Von der Leyen's statements come 3 weeks before he visits Beijing for the EU-China summit, in which the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, will also participate. The summit will take place from December 7-8 and Von der Leyen and Michel will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
China has raised concerns about the commission's investigation, saying it would disrupt the global supply chain. (A2 Televizion)
