On the third anniversary of Ukraine's war with Russia, a dozen European and Canadian leaders visited Kiev on Monday, in an apparent show of support for Ukraine amid growing uncertainty over the Donald Trump administration's commitment to helping Kiev confront the Russian invasion.

Among Ukraine's key supporters were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. During the meeting with the latter, Zelensky was seen in tears, visibly moved by Trudeau's embrace.

In a post on X, von der Leyen declared that Europe was in Kiev because “Ukraine is in Europe.” She emphasized that the fate of Europe is closely linked to the fate of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, transatlantic relations have been shaken by the United States' new stance on Ukraine. President Trump has made harsh statements against Zelenskyy, calling him a dictator and suggesting that Ukraine is partly responsible for the war. His administration has also signaled that it will not support Ukraine's membership in NATO and does not expect Kiev to retake the territories occupied by Russia, which make up about 20% of the country.

Faced with this situation, the European Union has reacted by increasing its support for Ukraine. The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, has called an emergency summit on March 6 to discuss assistance to Kiev. Meanwhile, the EU has adopted a series of new sanctions against Russia, including measures against its fleet of ships that evade embargoes and transport oil, gas or grain stolen from Ukraine.

Against the backdrop of a difficult war and a shortage of weapons and troops, Ukraine faces an uncertain future, as Europe tries to shore up support for it. (A2 Televizion)
