Thousands of Syrian refugees are returning to Syria from Lebanon and Turkey

Thousands of displaced Syrians who took refuge in Lebanon and Turkey continue to return to their homes in Syria. Hundreds of vehicles, many of them loaded with personal belongings, formed long lines today at the border crossings between Lebanon and Syria. Some of the displaced crossed the border on foot.

Similar scenes of Syrian refugees returning to their homes just days after the fall of Bashar al-Assad were also seen in Turkey, where 3 million Syrians found refuge in the last decade.

The fall of the authoritarian government of Syria and the seizure of power by the rebels a few days ago was met with celebration, fear and alarm around the world, reports A2.

Bashar al-Assad left Syria on Sunday, dramatically ending his 14-year battle to hold on to power and establish control over the civil war-torn country that had become a battleground for groups aligned with regional and international powers.

Syrians displaced this decade and residents of the Middle East are celebrating the overthrow of Assad and his regime, which during these 14 years of civil war caused the death of half a million Syrians and the displacement of millions more.

But his fall is also accompanied by concerns in a region already mired in unrest.

Officials in Turkey and Lebanon say they do not know the exact numbers of Syrian refugees who have returned to Syria in recent days, but Turkey announced that it would open a third border crossing in the coming days to accommodate their voluntary return. / Voice of America (A2 Televizion)
