Moscow closes airports, rain of drones from Kiev, killed in Ukraine too

Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow for the second night in a row, forcing the temporary closure of four airports in the Russian capital. Authorities said the airports were closed for several hours to ensure security but then reopened.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on social media that at least 19 Ukrainian drones had been destroyed before they reached the city from different directions. He said debris from the drones had fallen on one of the city's main highways but there were no casualties.

Governors of other Russian cities, including Penza and Voronezh, also reported drone attacks, while the military said it had shot down more than 100 of them with air defenses across the country.

The night before, the defense ministry in Moscow said it had destroyed 26 Ukrainian drones.

The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv also said Russia had carried out drone strikes overnight, destroying a market that was engulfed in flames. The capital Kiev was not spared, with the governor of the Odessa region, Oleh Kiper, saying one person had been killed there. The attacks come after reports of renewed attempts by Ukrainian troops to enter the Kursk region of Russia, where three people were reportedly killed. In April, Moscow said it had taken full control of the region, but Kiev insists it continues to maintain a troop presence there. The wave of drones over Moscow also comes just days before the grand May 9 parade, when Moscow celebrates victory over Nazism. (A2 Televizion)
