A murder investigation has been opened by British police after a 60-year-old man died on board the luxury cruise ship MSC Virtuosa, just hours after it departed the port of Southampton. The ship had set off on a two-day voyage to the Belgian city of Bruges on Saturday evening, but the journey was marred by a tragic incident.
According to authorities, a fight was reported at around 8:30 p.m. The victim, believed to have been a friend of the arrested person, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have arrested a 57-year-old man from Exeter on suspicion of murder, who is currently in custody, A2 CNN reports.
The victim's body was kept on board until Monday morning, when the cruise ship docked at the Horizon terminal in Southampton. A source on board the ship told MailOnline that there was a heavy police presence in the port and that several of the victim's family members - including two women and a boy, believed to be his children - had attempted to board the ship to retrieve the body.
Hampshire Police confirmed the launch of a murder investigation, noting that the incident took place in British waters. “We are treating this as an isolated incident,” said Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, as he thanked the ship’s crew for their cooperation. (A2 Televizion)
