Vatican in silence over election of new Pope, mobile signal deactivated

Rome is preparing to experience one of the most solemn and delicate moments in the life of the Church: the election of the new Pope. In the capital, among the many voices that are being raised, those of the most conservative Catholic communities are coming out strongly, hoping for a change of direction regarding the papacy of Pope Francis.

During the conclave that begins on May 7 at 3:00 p.m. to elect a new Pope, the Vatican will disable mobile phone signals to preserve the secrecy of the vote. The signal will be restored once the name of the new Pope is announced.

The measures taken are intended to guarantee an undisturbed and secure process, in accordance with tradition and the rules of the Holy See. The participants in the vote, 133 cardinals from around the world, will be excluded from any technological devices.

The 133 cardinals who will vote, all under 80 years old, except for two who are absent for health reasons, will gather on May 7 in the afternoon under the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.

They are sworn to secrecy, risking expulsion if they reveal what happens, as are their support staff, from doctors to elevator operators, cafeteria and cleaning staff, who took the oath on May 5.

The Roman Catholic Church, a 2,000-year-old institution with huge global influence, is struggling to adapt to the modern world and recover its reputation after the scandal of child sexual abuse by priests. (A2 Televizion)
