NATO has announced that production of six new Boeing aircraft will begin as it moves to replace its aging fleet of AWACS surveillance aircraft, foreign media write .
The planes to be replaced have been in service since the Cold War in the 1980s. The alliance said the first Boeing E-7A Wedgetail is expected to be operational by 2031.
"This investment in state-of-the-art technology demonstrates the strength of transatlantic defense cooperation as we continue to adapt to a more volatile world," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Approval of the project by members means it is one of NATO's biggest-ever investments. (A2 Televizion)
