Air pollution, record concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere during

In 2022, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached an all-time high of 417.9 parts per million (ppm), 2.2 ppm above the 2021 value of 415.7 ppm (+0.53%).

The figures were announced by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in view of the COP28 in Dubai.

In 2022, concentrations of two other greenhouse gases also increased: methane went from 1907 parts per billion (ppb) to 1923 (+0.84%), nitrogen dioxide from 334.4 parts per billion to 335.8 ( +0.42%).

The last time Earth had a concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere like that of 2022 was three to five million years ago, when the temperature was 2-3 degrees warmer and the sea level was higher, 10- 20 meters.

The increase in CO2 in the atmosphere in 2022 was slightly less than the average annual increase over the last decade (+2.46 ppm).

This slowdown occurred due to short-term natural causes, namely a greater absorption of carbon dioxide by ecosystems after several years of the "La Nina" phenomenon, that is, the periodic and natural cooling of the central and eastern tropical Pacific.

Emissions from industrial activities, increasing

However, WMO notes that emissions caused by industrial activities have continued to increase.

The average concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in 2022 was 150% higher than the value in 1750 (278.3 ppm). For methane the concentration was 264% higher than that of the mid-eighteenth century (when it was 729.2 ppb). For nitrogen dioxide it was 124% higher (270.1 ppb).  (A2 Televizion)
