The new coalition government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives in Germany approved exports of military equipment to Israel worth almost 4 million euros in its first five weeks in power.

This was revealed following a response from the Ministry of Economics to a question submitted to the Bundestag by MP Desiree Becker of the Die Linke party, a copy of which was obtained by the German News Agency.

Between May 7 and June 10, German manufacturers secured export licenses worth 3.98 million euros to Israel, a country that has been heavily criticized recently, including by Chancellor Merz himself, for the way their army has waged war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.

The equipment that was granted permission to export did not include military weapons, according to the ministry. These are approvals for exports of a relatively small volume of military goods. The previous government, under the center-left, exported military goods worth almost half a billion euros to Israel after Hamas's intervention in the southern territory.

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, items that secured export licenses reached a value of 28 million euros, meaning that Israel was the tenth largest buyer of German military equipment. (A2 Televizion)
