"If it is not restored, it will collapse in the first earthquake",

The famous "Hagia Sophia" church, converted into a mosque by order of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has suffered damage. In a video of the security cameras that went viral, it is seen that from the dome of the symbol of Istanbul, pieces of plaster fall on the heads of visitors, putting them in danger.

The Turkish newspaper Birgün points out that concrete fragments are falling from the Hagia Sophia. The footage is believed to have been filmed in September 2022 and visitors are seen running in fear.

Turkish officials quoted by the newspaper claimed that " pieces of plaster fall from the ceiling due to the moisture created ".

Commenting on the visual material, the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Art History Association (Sanat Tarihi Derneği STD), Serif Yasar, emphasized that "if Saint Sophia is not restored, it will collapse with the first earthquake ".

" When Hagia Sophia was a museum, that is, before it was transformed into a mosque, there was a scientific council. In the last meeting before it was abolished, the council decided that the Hagia Sophia is 1500 years old and if it is not restored as soon as possible, it will be destroyed by earthquakes. Groups of no more than 25 people should be accepted inside it ," said Yasar. (A2 Televizion)
