A Turkish Airlines plane landed at Damascus International Airport today for the first time after a 13-year hiatus.
As AFP reported, the plane arrived from Istanbul with 345 passengers and humanitarian aid. Among those on board were Turkish Airlines CEO Bilal Eksi and Turkish officials.
" The first Turkish Airlines passenger plane landed at Damascus International Airport after a 13-year hiatus, with Syrians on board ," the official Sana news agency reported.
Ex told reporters that his company will operate three flights a week to Syria.
" I hope that the flights we have resumed will strengthen the relations between our countries ," he said.
Ankara, a supporter of the new Syrian regime that toppled Bashar al-Assad last month, announced on January 15 that it would resume commercial flights to Damascus.
Qatar Airways was the first international airline to resume flights to Damascus on January 7. A Syria Airlines flight to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates on the same day was the first international commercial flight to depart from the airport since Assad's overthrow on December 8. (A2 Televizion)
