Iran has never plotted to assassinate US President-elect Donald Trump, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in an interview with NBC News, a move that Iran has denied in the past.
"We have never attempted it and we would never do it," the Iranian President said, A2 reports.
Trump said last year during the US election campaign that Iran may have been behind attempts to assassinate him. Trump, who won last year's US election and will take office on Monday, survived two assassination attempts during the campaign, one in September while playing golf at his course in West Palm Beach, Florida, and another during a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Investigators have found no evidence of Iranian involvement in either. Iran has also previously denied US allegations of interference in American affairs, including cyber operations.
Tehran says Washington has interfered in its affairs for decades, citing events ranging from a 1953 coup against a prime minister to the killing of its military commander in 2020 in a US drone strike.
The commander-in-chief of the Iranian army, Abdul Rahim Mousavi, was filmed at an undisclosed location alongside Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, announcing the expansion of Tehran's drone arsenal: "With the permission of the Supreme Leader, I announce the order for the addition of 1,000 strategic drones to the General Combat Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Army."
