A horrific incident has taken place in Brazil, where a mother tried to sell her newborn baby to pay for cooking classes. Brazilian police announced that the woman and three other people have been arrested.
The incident occurred in the city of Goiânia, about 900 kilometers from São Paulo, writes A2.
The woman's neighbors notified authorities of the attempted sale and police managed to rescue the baby, who was being sold for an undisclosed amount.
The woman, who is suspected of having suffered from postpartum depression, arranged the deal through her boyfriend, who was not the child's father. The boyfriend, along with a friend, had planned to sell the baby to a local businesswoman who was looking for a child, but it was not known what would happen to the child after the purchase. Authorities discovered that the businesswoman had registered to adopt a child on the National Adoption Registry, but had not yet been included on the waiting list.
Goiás police chief Humberto Teófilo said the mother had accepted a sum of money to hand over the baby, and that she would use the money to pay rent and take a cooking class. He added that the mother expected the payment to be made in the coming days.
