White House withdraws nomination of CDC director, lacks enough votes

The White House withdrew the nomination of Dr. David Weldon, a former Florida lawmaker, to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Senate Health Committee announced Thursday morning that it would cancel the scheduled confirmation hearing for Mr. Weldon due to the White House's decision, writes A2.

An official with knowledge of the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the White House withdrew the nomination because it became clear that Mr. Weldon did not have the votes needed for confirmation.

Mr. Weldon is considered a close confidant of the new Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who for years has been one of the country's leading anti-vaccine activists.

The former Florida lawmaker is also a well-known critic of vaccines and the CDC, which promotes vaccines and analyzes how safe they are.

Weldon becomes the third Trump administration nominee to withdraw before a confirmation hearing. Previously, former lawmaker Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration for attorney general and Chad Chronister for head of the Drug Enforcement Administration./Voice of America (A2 Televizion)
