Atomic Energy Organization: Iran was not trying to build nuclear weapons

The nuclear watchdog does not believe Iran was trying to develop a nuclear weapon, its chief told Sky News.

"We have concluded that we cannot assert that there is any systematic effort in Iran at the moment to produce a nuclear weapon," says Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He tells leading world news anchor Yalda Hakim that the IAEA report, which has been widely cited by Israel, found that Iran is enriching uranium to 60%, the only country in the world to do so, so "there were elements to be concerned about."

"But as for saying they are building and producing a nuclear weapon - no, we did not say that," he added, writes A2 CNN.

Asked if the IAEA was concerned about the impact of Israel targeting nuclear facilities, Grossi replies: "Of course it is."

He warns that "there is always the possibility of a radiological event" when a nuclear site is hit, such as "the dispersion of nuclear material into the atmosphere." (A2 Televizion)
