Israel declares state of emergency after massive attacks on Iran

Israel has carried out dozens of airstrikes on Iran and declared a state of emergency as Tehran prepares for retaliation.

According to foreign media, its military said it had launched a "preemptive, precise and combined offensive based on high-quality intelligence" - dubbed Operation "Lion on the Rise".

"Dozens of IRA Air Force aircraft completed the first phase that included strikes on dozens of military targets, including nuclear targets in various areas of Iran," a statement said, writes A2 CNN.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack was intended to "reduce the Iranian threat to Israel's survival" and would last "for as many days as necessary to remove the threat."

Iranian state media reported that the head of the country's powerful Revolutionary Guard, Hossein Salami, had been killed.

Mehr News said nuclear scientist Fereydoun Abbasi was also dead. Theoretical physicist Dr. Mohammed Mehdi Tehranchi and Major General Gholam Ali Rashid also suffered the same fate.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said America was not involved and that Israel believes the attacks are necessary in self-defense.
