The Liberals in Canada seemed to be heading for a devastating defeat until President Donald Trump began attacking the neighboring country's economy and threatening its sovereignty.
According to foreign media, Mark Carney's Liberal Party has won the election in Canada, culminating in a stunning comeback fueled by threats of annexation and Donald Trump's trade war.
After the polls closed, the Liberals were projected to win more of the 343 seats in parliament than the Conservative Party.
However, it was not immediately clear whether they would win an outright majority or would have to rely on one or more smaller parties to form a government and pass legislation.
In a victory speech in Ottawa, Mr. Carney said: “President Trump is trying to destroy us so that America can own us. That will never happen.”
"We will fight with everything we have to get the best deal for Canada," he said, according to A2 CNN.
Trump's actions angered Canadians and fueled a surge of nationalism that helped the Liberals turn the tide of electoral events and win a fourth consecutive term in power.
"We have overcome the shock of American betrayal, but we must never forget the lessons," Mr. Carney said in his victory speech. (A2 Televizion)
