French President Emmanuel Macron said US President Donald Trump's decision to suspend reciprocal tariffs for 90 days has opened space for talks, although he said it is only a "fragile pause".

“The partial suspension of US tariffs for 90 days sends a signal and leaves the door open for talks. But this pause is fragile,” Macron wrote on the social network X. He called the pause “fragile” because, according to him, these 90 days reflect uncertainty for all businesses on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. “Fragile, because this 90-day pause means 90 days of uncertainty for all our businesses, on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond,” he added.

Reuters also reported that Macron reaffirmed that France and the European Union will be united in negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement and the final lifting of US tariffs, writes A2 CNN. Trump on Wednesday suspended reciprocal tariffs with all countries for 90 days, except China, which he increased to 125%. The US left in force a universal tariff of 10%.

Wrecked financial markets were given a brief reprieve on Wednesday when Trump decided to halt tariffs on dozens of countries. However, his escalating trade dispute with China, the world's second-largest economy, has continued to fuel fears of a recession and further retaliation.

The Southeast Asian manufacturing hub is prepared to crack down on Chinese goods shipped to the US through its territory in hopes of avoiding tariffs, Reuters reported on Friday. (A2 Televizion)
