Twelve Western countries have agreed on measures to "intercept and block" the so-called 'shadow fleet' of Russian tankers.
The news was announced by Estonian government officials who said the move is intended to prevent sanctions violations and increase the cost of the war in Ukraine to Moscow.
Germany, Britain, Poland, the Netherlands, the five Nordic countries and the three Baltic states agreed on these measures, where the leaders of a multinational military force consisting of 10 countries, led by London, are expected to meet on Tuesday.
Western countries have imposed sanctions on a wide range of ships they say are used by Moscow to avoid restrictions on the export of Russian oil and other cargo.
The operation of 'shadow ships' is not regulated by law and they do not have insurance from Western companies.
"We are taking concerted steps to deter Russia's shadow fleet and prevent attempts to evade sanctions," Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said in a statement.
Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Finland and Estonia will start checking the insurance documents of ships suspected of passing through the English Channel, the Danish strait, the Gulf of Finland, he added./ VOA (A2 Televizion)
