The Kremlin has responded by dismissing claims that Russia was ready to launch a nuclear war as "unacceptable madness". Dmitry Peskov, her spokesman, referred to the comments as "crazy accusations".

The Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle was unveiled by Vladimir Putin in 2018. At the time, he claimed it had been developed as a response to the US's development of a new generation of weapons.
According to the Russian defense ministry, owned by the Zvezda TV channel, the ballistic missile was seen being transported in a launch pad, slowly lifted to a vertical position and then landed on a shaft in the Orenburg region near Kazakhstan.
