After suspending tariffs on many countries around the world and replacing them with a flat 10% tariff, with the exception of China, for which he increased tariffs to 125%, President Donald Trump says he was "watching" the bond market last night and saw "people getting a little worried."
According to foreign media, speaking about today's movement in the bond market, he said that today "the bond market is beautiful now."
"The big move wasn't what I did today, the big move was what I did on Liberation Day," he adds, referring to April 2, when he unveiled his tariff package for many countries around the world.
"We had Liberation Day in America. We were liberated from all the terrible deals that were made, all the terrible trade deals that were made," Trump said, A2 CNN writes.
As foreign media reported earlier, investors had been pouring money into government bonds - but on Monday they had a change of heart and started selling them.
30-year Treasury yields - the interest rate on the debt - hit 4.92% today, their biggest three-day jump since 1982.
Trump went on to say that "nothing is done yet" and added that China wants to make a deal with the US, but according to him, he doesn't know how.
"China wants to make a deal, they just don't know how to do it," he said further, writes A2 CNN.
"They are very proud people and President XI is a proud man. They are in the process of discovery, but they want to make a deal," Trump concluded his speech, shortly after increasing tariffs on China to 125%. (A2 Televizion)
