Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shook hands with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin today and was welcomed with an official military ceremony upon his arrival in the German capital.
According to foreign media, the Ukrainian President is there seeking to secure support from one of his country's main European allies and further military assistance, as peace talks stall, Donald Trump's frustration with the lack of progress grows and Russia steps up its bombing.
Germany has been the second-largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the U.S. Merz first announced on Monday that Germany was lifting range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine, leading many to wonder whether today's visit will include confirmation that Ukraine will finally receive long-range Taurus missiles after repeated requests.
Merz, a conservative who took office this month, has pledged to take a more leading role in providing support for Ukraine than his Social Democrat predecessor, Olaf Scholz.
He visited Ukraine with other European leaders just days after becoming chancellor and on Monday supported Ukraine's right to launch long-range missile strikes on Russian territory - in contrast to Scholz's cautious rhetoric on the issue. (A2 Televizion)
