New protests have erupted in Los Angeles against immigration raids. According to local media reports, protesters clashed with police outside a major furniture store, Home Depot. Meanwhile, dozens of people were arrested in connection with yesterday's demonstrations in downtown.
Tom Homan, the border official of Donald Trump's administration, has arrived in Los Angeles to closely monitor the raids against immigrants.
In a statement to Fox News he said the National Guard would be deployed to Los Angeles County as protests against ICE continued to escalate Saturday afternoon.
President Donald Trump spoke at Truth Social to criticize the inaction of state and local leadership.
"If Governor Gavin Newscum of California and Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles cannot do their jobs, which everyone knows they cannot, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, the riots and the looters, the way it needs to be solved!!!" Trump wrote.
Newsom responded in X, claiming that the federal government is "moving to take over the California National Guard" and deploy 2,000 soldiers.
"This action is intentionally inflammatory and will only escalate tensions," Newsom wrote. "Los Angeles authorities are able to receive assistance from law enforcement at any time. We are coordinating closely with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need. The Guard has served Los Angeles admirably throughout the recovery. This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust."
Newsom noted that California is deploying additional California Highway Patrol troops to maintain safety on Los Angeles freeways "to maintain the peace." (A2 Televizion)
