Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day ceasefire to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism. The ceasefire will last from midnight on May 7-8 to midnight on May 10-11, the Kremlin said.
"By decision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, for humanitarian reasons from midnight between May 7 and 8 to midnight between May 10 and 11, the Russian side declares a ceasefire. All military actions are suspended during this period. Russia believes that the Ukrainian side will follow this example," the statement said.
"In the event of a violation of the ceasefire by the Ukrainian side, the Russian armed forces will provide an adequate and effective response. The Russian side once again declares its readiness for peaceful negotiations without preconditions, aimed at eliminating the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis and constructive interaction with international partners," the Kremlin emphasizes.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio meanwhile held a telephone conversation during which they stressed "the importance of consolidating new preconditions for the start of negotiations on Ukraine, with the aim of agreeing on a credible path to a lasting, sustainable peace," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga commented on X about Putin's unilateral declaration of a three-day ceasefire from May 8.
"If Russia really wants peace, it should cease fire immediately. Why wait until May 8? If the war could stop now and the ceasefire be maintained for 30 days, it would be a real step forward, not just a gesture for a parade," he said.
US President Donald Trump had previously expressed his deep disappointment with Russia, saying President Vladimir Putin should stop shooting and reach a deal. (A2 Televizion)
