The winner of the German parliamentary elections, Friedrich Merz, said he is ready to form a broad coalition government with the Social Democrats by the Easter period, so that it is able to make decisions.
Merz also ruled out policies for a quick reform of Germany's state borrowing limits and said it was too early to say whether the outgoing parliament could push through a massive increase in military spending.
"You know that we are prepared to form a government. You know that I am also prepared to take leadership and responsibility for the government as Federal Chancellor. But all this requires a good coalition negotiated with the SPD. I am assuming again that we can negotiate a good coalition agreement with the SPD and that we can do this within a reasonable period, so that we have a majority government by Easter, which will also be able to make decisions," Merz said, among other things.
