The explosion that occurred this morning at a construction site of one of the refineries of the Italian hydrocarbon company, "Eni", in Calenzano has left two dead, 26 injured and three people are still missing.
The Prefecture of Florence has confirmed the figures, while the column of smoke is visible from the entire Florence region. In addition to the nine injured who were accompanied by ambulances to area hospitals, two of whom were in serious condition, 17 other people presented themselves at the hospital premises to receive medical treatment, while three others are still missing.
"Firefighters have extinguished the flames to avoid spreading to nearby storage facilities. Technicians from our regional environmental protection agency are on site to assess the potential effects of pollutants, including any effects on waterways. The blast was felt in cities far away the place where it happened", said the president of the Tuscany region, Eugenio Giani.
In the late afternoon, one of the victims was identified. His name is Vincenzo Martinelli (51 years old). Martinelli was a tanker driver and lived in Prato.
Meanwhile, a witness told the media: "I heard a loud noise, as if it was a bomb, a rocket, it broke all the doors, windows, everything . "
"I saw a terrible scene, there is total destruction. I imagine whoever was there working and was near or under the charging infrastructure, it must have seemed like hell. The situation is indescribable," said the mayor of Calenzano, Giuseppe Carovani after a check in the area.
