Six penitentiary police agents at the Porto Azzurro prison, on the island of Elba, have been taken to the emergency room of the Portoferraio hospital intoxicated by smoke.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, when some prisoners allegedly set fire to two cells and attacked security staff.
The agents intervened to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further, but were exposed to thick smoke and injured while trying to control the situation.
Authorities have launched investigations to uncover the causes of the incident and identify the perpetrators of this serious act within the prison premises.
The incident has reignited concerns about conditions in Italian prisons and the safety of prison police staff, who are increasingly facing violent episodes from inmates. (A2 Televizion)
