A huge hail and rain storm has hit southern Spain, covering popular tourist beaches with ice and flooding roads in the Costa Blanca, Almeria, Murcia and Granada. The regions were placed on a yellow alert for heavy rain and hail, according to the state weather agency AEMET.
Dramatic footage shows flooded city streets as vehicles struggle to navigate through the rushing waters and tourists run for shelter, writes A2 CNN.
Mallorca was also hit hard by extreme weather a few days ago. Areas such as Manacor, Sant Llorenç and Sa Pobla were hit by flash floods.
The unusual meteorological phenomenon is known in Spain as DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos), which occurs when a cold air mass separates from the Atlantic air current and collides with warm Mediterranean air. This contrast causes powerful storms, torrential rains and flooding. (A2 Televizion)
