A major prisoner exchange took place between Russia and Ukraine today.
According to foreign media, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russia has handed over 270 prisoners of war and 120 civilians to Ukraine.
In response, 270 Russian soldiers and 120 civilians, including some from the Kursk region captured by Ukrainian armed forces, have been released.
The Russian Defense Ministry added that Russians, both military and civilian, are currently in Belarus, A2 CNN reports. The exchanges are expected to continue in the coming days.
The ministry concluded by saying that the released Russians will return to Russia for treatment and rehabilitation.
The news was also confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said that the first phase of a "1000 for 1000" prisoner exchange has been completed.
"We are bringing our people home," Zelensky wrote on the social network 'X', writes A2 CNN.
"Today – 390 people. On Saturday and Sunday, we expect the exchange to continue," he continued.
The Ukrainian leader also said that "every last name, every detail about every person" is being verified.
"We will continue our diplomatic efforts to make such steps possible," Zelensky concluded.
