Russia is considering declaring the LGBT movement extremist

In recent days, the Ministry of Justice in Russia has submitted a motion to the Supreme Court of the country, through which it requests the declaration of the international LGTB movement as extremist and therefore the prohibition of its activities.

According to the sources, the motion states that the LGTB movement has occasionally shown signs of extremist activity, including inciting social and religious disputes.

If the Court upholds this motion then, the LGBT community in Russia will be easily vulnerable to litigation.

The designation of an individual or group as an extremist has been used in the past by Russian authorities against human rights organizations and opposition groups such as that of Alexei Navalny, currently in prison.

The Supreme Court must rule on the motion by November 30.

Russia under President Putin has cracked down on LGBT activism, which he sees as part of the West's attacks on traditional Russian values. (A2 Televizion)
