Russia continues persecution, imprisonment for Navalny's lawyers

Lawyers for the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny have been found guilty by a Russian court of participating in an extremist organization and sentenced to 3.5 to 5.5 years in prison.

Vadim Kobzev, Igor Sergunin and Alexei Lipcher were arrested in October 2023 and added that month to the official list of “terrorists and extremists.”

Navalny, who died suddenly in an Arctic prison, had also been convicted of extremism and other charges, which he denied.

His wife, Yulia Navalnaya, described the lawyers as political prisoners and said they were arrested solely for exercising their professional duties.

The Kremlin has avoided commenting on individual court cases, but Russian authorities have labeled Navalny and his supporters as Western-backed traitors seeking to destabilize the country. (A2 Televizion)
