NATO fully supports President Donald Trump's efforts to "stop the bloodshed with a just and lasting peace" in Ukraine, its secretary general said.
According to foreign media, speaking in Brussels ahead of a meeting of the Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine, Mark Rutte said the group would "focus on continued support for Ukraine as it fights against Russian aggression."
The former Dutch prime minister added: “NATO’s support for Ukraine is not about prolonging the war, but about ensuring that Ukraine can defend itself now and prevent any aggression in the future.”
Ukraine invited to NATO summit
Rutte also said that Ukraine has been invited to a NATO summit in The Hague in three weeks, which he said would focus on a "major increase" in defense spending and where the war in Ukraine would be discussed.
Trump has pressed for an end to the war, with Ukraine accepting a US-proposed ceasefire that the Kremlin has effectively rejected. Vladimir Putin has made clear that any peace solution must be on his terms.
NATO's response to Russian attack would be 'devastating'
Rutte said NATO's reaction would be "devastating" if Putin attacked the alliance, writes A2 CNN.
"We are always prepared for any eventuality and Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin should know that if he tries, our reaction will be devastating. And he knows it," he said, writes A2 CNN. (A2 Televizion)
