The US Department of State (DASH) has notified the US Congress of its intention to reorganize the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and terminate some functions that are not in line with the administration's priorities, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday.
In a statement issued by Rubio, it was stated that USAID "has been away from the mission for some time, and as a result, the benefits have been too small and the costs have been too high."
"Thanks to President Trump, this era of fiscal irresponsibility is over. We are reorienting our foreign assistance programs to align with what is best for the United States and our citizens," the statement said.
Among other things, it was mentioned that the US Department of State and USAID have notified Congress of their intention "to initiate a reorganization of certain USAID functions with the Department of State effective July 1, and to terminate existing USAID functions that are not consistent with the administration's priorities."
Shortly after the start of President Trump's second term in the White House, on January 20, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by billionaire Elon Musk, began reducing USAID and incorporating the remaining portion into the State Department.
Since then, the US administration has laid off hundreds of workers and contractors, and has severed contracts for projects worth billions, on which tens of millions of people around the world depend.
Rubio said earlier this month that more than 80 percent of all USAID programs have already been suspended.
USAID was known as the US Government's primary agency for administering foreign civilian and development assistance. It operated in more than 100 countries, distributing billions of dollars worth of aid each year.
