The United States abstained from voting on a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly marking the anniversary of the war in Ukraine, after several changes were approved in its text.
The first draft of the resolution did not call Russia the aggressor in the war and did not recognize Ukraine's territorial integrity. However, several amendments were approved before the vote to strengthen the language against Russia and to make Ukraine's territorial integrity clear.
The amended resolution, drafted by the US, was approved by the UN General Assembly. The US is expected to face further opposition from its European allies later on Monday at the UN Security Council, where it is expected to introduce the same resolution, which does not directly blame Russia for the war.
One of the amendments added a paragraph reaffirming the commitment to “the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters.” Another amendment changed the language from “the tragic loss of life during the Russia-Ukraine conflict” to “the complete occupation of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.”
These developments in the General Assembly and Security Council come on the anniversary of Russia’s war on Ukraine. It comes days after a high-level meeting between the United States and Russia, without Ukraine present, to discuss a process to end the war. The U.S. special envoy for Ukraine also traveled separately to Kyiv after the meeting. (A2 Televizion)
