The United States and Russia thawed frozen relations in Saudi Arabia. The meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Moscow's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Saudi Arabia lasted four hours, writes A2 CNN.
They were then seen leaving for a short break, which turned into a working lunch. Chief diplomat Rubio confirmed that Washington and Moscow agreed on four basic principles:
1. “We restore the functionality of our respective missions in Washington and Moscow. For us to continue on this path, we must have diplomatic facilities that function normally.”
2. “We will appoint a high-level team to assist in the negotiations and work towards ending the conflict in Ukraine in a way that is sustainable and acceptable to all parties involved.”
3. "Let's start discussing, thinking about, and examining the geopolitical and economic cooperation that could result from the end of the conflict in Ukraine."
4. “The five of us who were here today... will remain engaged in this process to ensure that it moves forward in a productive manner.”
Russian diplomats have explained that “a very constructive and very positive dialogue has begun.” “Unlike the Biden administration, which never tried to listen to Russia’s position, this was a clear attempt to start a dialogue to understand Moscow’s position and discuss things we can agree on,” said Yuri Ushakov, an adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He added that the meeting was not bad, as the parties held a serious discussion on all issues, hinting that Ukraine was also discussed. “We agreed to take into account each other’s interests and develop bilateral relations, as Moscow and Washington are interested in this,” the Russian official stressed. He further added that the parties agreed that a “special team of negotiators will establish contacts at the appropriate time.” (A2 Televizion)
