In Brussels, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was asked about the new US tariffs.
According to foreign media, when asked about policies, Rutte said he was "laser-focused on making sure we keep NATO territories safe."
"From this we understand that it is a long-term and persistent, unpleasant threat and that is Russia, that is what our focus should be. That is why I am not commenting on the tariffs," he further said.
When asked how Donald Trump's tariffs were affecting countries' finances, leading to rising inflation and therefore hurting their ability to spend on defence, Rutte said: "That's for national politics and politicians to navigate and that's what they are doing."
"I don't think I'm helping this alliance by commenting on something that's not really part of the alliance's policy, and that's to make sure that we can defend ourselves," he said, A2 CNN writes.
However, Rutte said the new policies announced by Trump did not violate NATO treaties. (A2 Televizion)
