A former nursery worker in Lyon, France, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after causing the death of an 11-month-old baby by giving her a laxative to drink.
Miriam Zaouen, 30, was found guilty by the Rhône Criminal Court of "torture or barbaric acts leading to the death of the victim, without the intention of provoking him."
The jury rejected the charge of intentional homicide, which prosecutor Baptiste Gaudreau had requested, saying a sentence of 30 years in prison was needed because, according to him, the defendant " knowingly took the life of a defenseless child ."
Jaouen admitted giving the corrosive liquid to the little girl, but denied wanting to kill her. This was her line of defense throughout the trial, during which, after initially giving different versions, she finally described how she held the baby's head and poured the expectorant into her mouth because she "couldn't stand the crying anymore."
