In Catania, a three-story building collapsed due to a gas explosion in the San Giovanni Galermo neighborhood. The explosion occurred as two company teams were working to stop a gas leak in the city's network.
Catania Mayor Enrico Trantino said there was information about ten people injured, some of whom were in serious condition.
There is no information about possible victims, nor about the cause that led to the gas leak.
Firefighters arrived at the scene with three teams, including the special Nbcr ( Radiological Chemical Bacteriological Nuclear ) unit. The crisis unit activated by the Prefecture of Catania is organizing the evacuation of at least 150 people from the area, but the number of injured is currently provisional and could increase.
The hope is that since these are public buildings being renovated, there weren't many people inside them.
The street in the San Giovanni Galermo neighborhood of Catania looks like a war scene. A building and a car are on fire in the area, while about a dozen rescue teams are moving to search for injured or missing people.
"In the afternoon I noticed a firefighter at the entrance to the Chamber. The residents felt a strong smell of gas. At first we thought something had happened in our building, then we heard the noise and went outside, and from Viale Tirreno we saw flames. Then there were more explosions," a witness confessed.
