Strasbourg condemns Italy for immigrants

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has condemned Italy for detaining and holding 4 Ghanaian migrant minors in inhumane and degrading conditions in the Taranto area for almost two months in 2017. The court also ruled that Italy must pay them 6,500 euros for moral damages, plus 4,000 euros for legal expenses.

The four Ghanaian minors were born in 2000 and arrived on the Italian coast on May 22, 2017, claiming to be minors. However, they were still moved to the adult-only hotspot of Taranto, where they stayed until mid-July, when, following an intervention by the Strasbourg Court, they were moved to a juvenile facility.

Condemning Italy for the conditions in which they lived in Taranto, the Court relied on evidence provided by the four, including photographs showing overcrowding at the centre, designed to accommodate 400 people but at the time holding 1,419, and the conditions inadequate hygiene.

The decision states that the Italian government did not dispute these data, but explained that on 22 and 26 May 2017, two very large groups of migrants had landed, including 202 minors, and that these mass arrivals had made the situation particularly difficult to be managed. (A2 Televizion)
