Snowstorms cause deaths and destruction in the US

Powerful storms that killed three people in Mississippi and ripped roofs off buildings in a small Oklahoma town are moving east, triggering tornado warnings for the East Coast of the United States. Snowstorms have battered the Midwest, while strong winds are fanning wildfires in Texas.

Forecasters are warning that a storm coming from the Pacific is expected to bring rain and snow across California and other parts of the US West Coast from Wednesday through Friday.

Tornado warnings were issued Wednesday for the Carolinas, Florida and Virginia. Officials in Union County, North Carolina, said in a social media post that they were assessing storm damage while awaiting confirmation of a tornado. Officials said there were no injuries.

Strong winds in Texas and dry vegetation created favorable conditions for the spread of wildfires in some areas. About 20 homes and structures were reported burned in San Patricio County near the city of Corpus Christi, said County Judge David Kerbs. There were no initial reports of injuries.

Seven tornadoes have been confirmed in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana so far, according to preliminary data from the weather service. Powerful storms on the East Coast stretch from New York to Florida.

Overnight storms in Nebraska dumped about 4 inches of snow and brought winds of up to 60 miles per hour. At least 70 car accidents were reported in Minnesota, according to law enforcement. The National Guard has been activated to help drivers stranded by the snow.

Iowa police said at least 68 traffic accidents were reported from Tuesday to Wednesday, with a dozen cars crashing on I35 near Des Moines and other accidents on I80.

Storms have caused power outages in Texas, Tennessee and Alabama while nearly 600 flights have been canceled. VOA (A2 Televizion)
