Sweden calls on EU to "freeze" trade deal with Israel

Sweden's prime minister has called on the EU to "freeze" the trade agreement with Israel.

According to foreign media, Ulf Kristersson described the situation in Gaza as "absolutely deplorable."

He accused Israel of "failing to fulfill its most basic obligations and agreed commitments regarding humanitarian assistance."

In this situation, the Swedish leader urged the EU "as soon as possible" to freeze the trade agreement with Israel.

He said: "Therefore, Sweden demands that the EU, as soon as possible, freeze the trade component of the association agreement."

"Economic pressure on Israel must increase," the Swedish prime minister added, A2 CNN reports.

"The Israeli government should allow unrestricted humanitarian aid to Gaza," he continued.

Kristersson also called for increasing pressure on Hamas so that the hostages are released "immediately and unconditionally."

Recall that the EU-Israel Association Agreement regulates relations between the two - including trade.

Sweden has added to growing international pressure on Israel to take action to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In recent weeks, more countries have publicly called on Israel to take more decisive action to bring sufficient aid to the enclave.

As part of this, France, the United Kingdom and Canada have announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state, with certain conditions, writes A2 CNN.

The Netherlands previously made a proposal to the EU to freeze the trade part of the association agreement. (A2 Televizion)
