The German Foreign Ministry has said that the process to recognize a Palestinian state should begin now, but postponed any final decision until well into the future.
According to foreign media, this statement comes after the first announcement by France, the United Kingdom, and then Canada, which intend to take such action, based on the fulfillment of certain conditions.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said today that recognizing a Palestinian state comes at the end of negotiations for a two-state solution, but according to him, this process must start now, warning that Berlin will respond to "unilateral steps."
"A negotiated two-state solution remains the only path that can offer people on both sides a life in peace, security and dignity," he said, A2 CNN writes.
Wadephul added: "For Germany, recognition of a Palestinian state comes at the end of this process. But such a process must begin now."
His words come against the backdrop of growing international pressure being exerted on Israel, as the hunger crisis deepens in Gaza, writes A2 CNN.
The statement also comes as Wadephul travels to Israel today. During his visit, he will also visit the occupied West Bank. (A2 Televizion)
