Sweden may strip citizenship of people seen as a threat

Sweden's political parties have agreed that dual citizens who commit crimes that threaten national security should lose their Swedish passports.

The cross-party committee recommended that this change be applied to those who have used bribes or false information to obtain citizenship, or who have committed serious crimes.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said Sweden is facing violent extremism, organized crime and hostile state actors.

Currently, under the constitution, revoking citizenship is prohibited, and a vote to change the laws will be held next year.

The opposition has opposed the removal of citizenship for gang criminals, considering it an excessive step.

The ruling parties want to address rising gang crime, while the Swedish government is also planning to tighten rules for applying for citizenship, requiring applicants to have lived in Sweden for eight years and pass tests on Swedish language and society. (A2 Televizion)
