A large number of migrants have been flooding towards British shores from France, thanks in part to the good weather. On Sunday morning alone, British media report, six boats filled with men, women and children set off from the beaches of Gravelines, between the cities of Calais and Dunkirk, in Northern France.
What has angered the British most are the images coming from the departure point, where French police officers stood nearby without moving, taking photos as the boats set off. According to The Sun, one of the dinghies was even escorted into the English Channel by French authorities.
2025 is set to be one of the busiest years on record for illegal crossings across the Channel. So far, more than 13,000 people have arrived in Britain in small boats – a 30% increase on the same period last year. The record high remains 2022, with 45,755 crossings.
Unfortunately, this journey has also claimed lives. This year alone, at least two people have lost their lives, while the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 2024 was the deadliest year with at least 78 fatalities.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper have promised tough action against the criminal gangs that organise these trips. Cooper stressed that only international cooperation can stop this crisis, adding that the current situation is unacceptable and cannot continue any longer. (A2 Televizion)
