TikTok shuts down in the United States hours before ban

TikTok stopped working in the United States late Saturday and disappeared from the Apple and Google app stores ahead of the law taking effect this Sunday that requires the shutdown of the app used by 170 million Americans.

President-elect Donald Trump said earlier in the day that he would "most likely" give TikTok a 90-day reprieve from the ban after taking office on Monday, a promise that TikTok cited in a notice posted to users on the app.

TikTok, which is owned by China's Baidu Dens, previously notified users that they could not use TikTok in the US for the time being. "We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned." Other apps owned by the Chinese company are also already unavailable in the US, such as video editing app Capcut and social lifestyle app Lemon8. (A2 Televizion)
