Two US-sanctioned judges found murdered in Iran

Two prominent judges of Iran's Supreme Court have been killed in an attack on the court's headquarters, officials said.

The victims have been identified as Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh. Another judge was also injured in the attack that took place at the Palace of Justice in Tehran.

Iran's judiciary media office reported that a gunman had "infiltrated the Supreme Court in a planned act to assassinate two judges."

The motive for the attack is still unclear.

The initial investigation found that the attacker had no previous court case or other connections, the Iranian judiciary's media office said.

The Supreme Court is the highest judicial authority in Iran, and its head is appointed by the Supreme Leader. It is headquartered in Tehran and has branches throughout the country.

Details of the incident remain unclear. The judiciary's media office reported that the attacker "committed suicide" after the shooting, although this information has not been confirmed.

Other Iranian media outlets have reported that the attacker was a member of an "infiltrating security force" who had first stabbed a guard, taken the gun, and then carried out the killings.

The semi-official Mehr news agency, citing sources, reported that the judges were attacked with gunfire before the attacker committed suicide.

The two victims held important positions in Iran's powerful judicial system. Judge Mohammad Moghiseh had tried several political cases, including those involving supporters of the opposition Green Movement in 2009. He was under sanctions by the European Union and the United States for human rights abuses.

Judge Ali Razin had held many high-ranking positions and was accused by the opposition in Iran of being involved in a series of extrajudicial killings of political prisoners in 1988. REL (A2 Televizion)
